Telangana Farmer Commits Suicide Over Unwaived Crop Loan and Mounting Debts

A Telangana farmer, Pitla Linganna, also known as Thokala Linganna, from Ibrahimpatnam mandal, tragically died by suicide after facing financial debt and missing out on a crop loan waiver. Linganna consumed pesticide in his agricultural field and passed away while undergoing treatment in a private hospital.

Family’s Struggle with Debt and Loan Waivers

Linganna’s family revealed that he took this extreme step due to the inability to secure a loan waiver and the lack of financial support from the government for sowing crops. He had borrowed Rs 15 lakh from banks and private lenders and was struggling to cope with mounting debts.

The family’s financial woes deepened as their loans exceeded Rs 2 lakh, making them ineligible for waivers under government schemes. In contrast, his father-in-law, Narsiah, received a loan waiver of Rs 1 lakh from the BRS government.

Migration and Family Impact

Originally from Yellapelli village in Nirmal district, Linganna relocated to Ibrahimpatnam after marrying his wife, Lakshmi. The family owned 34 guntas of land and had taken Rs 80,000 and Rs 1.50 lakh in loans from Telangana Grameena Bank under Linganna’s and his wife’s names. Despite their struggles, Linganna’s father-in-law’s loans were waived, adding to the frustration and disparity.

Linganna is survived by his wife Lakshmi, son Harshvardhan, and daughter Nainika, who are now grappling with the aftermath of this tragic loss.

Urgent Need for Financial Aid

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by farmers in Telangana. The lack of adequate financial aid and unequal distribution of loan waivers continues to push debt-ridden farmers into dire circumstances.
