KTR Slams Telangana’s Transformer Policy for Apartments in Hyderabad as ‘Tughlaq Move’
KT Rama Rao (KTR), working president of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), has strongly condemned the Telangana government’s decision to require apartment residents in Hyderabad to install transformers to meet increasing power demands. KTR referred to this policy as a “Tughlaq move,” a term used to highlight its poor execution and impact on citizens.
Financial Burden on Residents
KTR pointed out that the cost of installing a transformer for each apartment complex was around Rs 3 lakh, translating to an additional burden of Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000 per household. He estimated the total financial cost to residents of Hyderabad at Rs 300 crore.
Irony of the Situation
KTR emphasized the irony of the situation, noting that the Congress government had previously promised free electricity up to 200 units, yet it was now imposing additional costs on citizens. He questioned why the government was passing on the responsibility of upgrading power infrastructure to the public when people are already paying for electricity consumption.
Policy’s Flawed Logic
The BRS leader criticized the policy’s logic, comparing it to asking citizens to install their own pipelines and roads if demand increased. KTR described the policy as a reflection of the government’s inefficiency and lack of proper planning. He called on Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to reconsider the decision and retract the policy.
Accountability for Infrastructure Failures
KTR also accused the government of approving construction projects without ensuring adequate transformer capacity in place. He stressed that builders and officials should be held accountable for these infrastructure failures, rather than penalizing middle-class families.
Concerns Over Power Cuts and Public Protests
KTR addressed the broader issue of unannounced power cuts in Hyderabad, accusing the government of indifference to the citizens’ power needs. He warned that the enforcement of this new policy would lead to strong public protests. “If the government does not reverse this decision, I will stand with the affected citizens,” KTR declared.
