Telangana Jagruthi Protest: Kavitha Demands BC Reservation & Caste Census Implementation
Telangana Jagruthi, the cultural and social wing of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), led by MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha, held a major protest at Indira Park, Hyderabad, on Friday. The protest, aligned with the birth anniversary of social reformer Savitribai Phule, aimed to demand the implementation of the Congress party’s Kamareddy BC Declaration.
The event, known as the BC Maha Sabha, saw participation from backward communities (BCs) across the state, calling for justice and enhanced representation for marginalized groups. Kavitha addressed the crowd, stressing the need for political accountability and social equity.
Kavitha highlighted the significance of Savitribai Phule’s legacy and criticized the Congress for its past neglect of BC issues. She pointed to historical instances like Jawaharlal Nehru’s dismissal of the Kaka Kalelkar Commission and the delayed implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations under Indira Gandhi’s leadership.
In her speech, Kavitha emphasized two key demands:
- The need for a caste census as part of the general census.
- Immediate implementation of the 42% BC reservation, as promised by the state government. She urged that the elections be conducted only after fulfilling this reservation commitment.
The Kamareddy Declaration, made during the last Assembly elections, promised an increase in BC reservation in local bodies from the current 23% to 42% within six months. It also proposed the creation of a Mahatma Jyotiba Phule BC sub-plan with statutory status, alongside an allocation of Rs 1 lakh crore over five years for BC welfare.
This protest marks a significant step in the ongoing effort to secure better representation and welfare for the BC communities in Telangana.
