Telangana CM Revanth Welcomes Centre’s Decision to Include Caste Census in National Survey

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy welcomed the Central government’s decision to include a caste census in the upcoming national census. He called it a historic development that validates Telangana’s pioneering efforts under Congress leadership.

A Historic Moment for Telangana

In his statement on social media platform X, Reddy expressed his pride, saying the move underscores that what Telangana does today, India will follow tomorrow. He credited Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for first advocating for a nationwide caste census during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Reddy added that under Gandhi’s vision, Telangana became the first state in India to carry out a Social, Economic, and Caste Survey in 2023—the first such survey since the British-led census of 1931.

Findings of the Survey

The survey results revealed that 56.32% of Telangana’s population belongs to Backward Castes (OBCs). Based on these findings, the state government proposed 42% reservations for OBCs across education, employment, and political representation. This proposal was presented in the Telangana Legislative Assembly.

A Proud Moment for OBC Empowerment

Reddy highlighted that the move to include the caste census in the national census is a significant step toward empowering OBC communities across India. He also acknowledged the efforts of the Telangana Congress, which had previously protested at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, demanding the Centre to take up the caste census.

Acknowledging the Centre’s Decision

The Telangana CM congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Cabinet for their decision. He expressed that the announcement represents progress for OBC empowerment at the national level.
