Piyush Goyal Inaugurates National Turmeric Board in Telangana to Boost Farmer Welfare and Exports

Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal inaugurated the National Turmeric Board in Nizamabad, Telangana, coinciding with the auspicious Makar Sankranti festival. The launch, held virtually, addresses the long-standing demands of turmeric farmers in the region.

Focus on Turmeric Cultivation in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

Goyal emphasized the significant potential for turmeric cultivation in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, stating that the Board’s primary focus would be on improving productivity, developing superior varieties, and enhancing exports of the ‘Golden Spice’. The initiative aims to improve the welfare of turmeric farmers, providing targeted support, and infrastructure development for the industry.

Announcement of the National Turmeric Board

The creation of the National Turmeric Board was first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a public meeting in Telangana on October 1, 2023. This decision reflects Modi’s commitment to supporting farmers and acknowledging turmeric’s role in India’s agricultural economy, according to Nizamabad MP Arvind Dharmapuri.

Addressing Farmers’ Long-Standing Demands

The establishment of the Board responds to a 40-year-old demand from farmers for dedicated assistance for turmeric cultivation and trade. Over the last decade, Nizamabad turmeric prices have averaged Rs 6,000 per quintal, with prices rising to an all-time high of Rs 18,000 per quintal in 2024 and continuing strong into 2025.

Key Focus Areas of the National Turmeric Board

The Board will focus on:

  • Research and Development to improve turmeric cultivation techniques.
  • Infrastructure Development, including the establishment of processing units.
  • Export Promotion to increase India’s share in the global turmeric market.
  • Ensuring Better Pricing for farmers to ensure sustainable growth in the industry.

This initiative is expected to bolster the economy of North Telangana, particularly Nizamabad, and enhance India’s standing in the global turmeric market.

New Leadership for the National Turmeric Board

Palle Ganga Reddy has been appointed as the first Chairperson of the National Turmeric Board, marking a significant step toward strengthening the turmeric industry in the region.
